Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 21 August 2024

Wednesday

Weather

A partly sunny morning followed by an very sunny afternoon. The air is inherently cool at the moment though, so we will probably climb no higher than 19°C. However, with the wind generally being just a light force 3 W’ly, this should still feel very comfortable, especially in Town and along the east coast.

Surf and the Water

Cleanish 3-4 foot surf on the west coast and super-smooth swimming conditions on the east. Big tides again, and with bigger high tide splashes than the last few days. Those highs will be 9.5m at roughly 8:30am and then 10m at roughly 9pm. Low tide will be at 3pm.

Thursday and Friday

Weather

This is the wet end of the week. Any early sunshine on Thursday will soon be swallowed up by cloud, which will go on to give us a drizzly late afternoon and evening, possibly with a spell of hill fog causing one or two delays at the airport. Thursday’s air will be mild though with a fresh force 5 SSW’ly wind bring air that is around 20-21°C despite the lake of sunshine. Friday then just as windy again, with another bout of rain, this one more in the middle of the day, round about lunchtime. On both occasions the most sheltered areas will be along the east coast, and in one or two southern corners of the west coast bays, such as Pleinmont or Richmond. Friday night might well have a much heavier spell of rain, leading to some pretty massive puddles. However, it’s currently uncertain whether that nasty episode might defer until Saturday.

Surf and the Water

More huge tidal movements, with the highs varying between 9.6m and 10m (in the mid-mornings and the late evenings). Conditions won’t just be great for surfing (3-4 feet increasing to 5-7 feet) but they will also be great for windsurfing and kitesurfing too. Swimmers should be mindful of strong tidal currents though, preferable sticking to the most sheltered spots along the north and east coasts.

The Weekend

Weather

Probably very wet for half of Saturday, the question is which half… morning or afternoon. Either way, It has the potential for some really thorough downpours, the kind that make driving conditions very difficult. The winds should gradually ease though, starting the day with a force 4-5 W’ly and likely finishing with just a light force 3. This will set us up nicely for a much more settled day on Sunday… the wind remaining light and W’ly, but dry throughout, with the skies becoming increasingly sunny. Temperatures will probably peak at 19°C and 20°C on Sunday (Town might always be a degree warmer though).

Surf and the Water

The surf will be about 6 feet on Saturday and then 4 feet on Sunday. Generally, swimming conditions will be best along the east coast, but the South and north coasts will also have some smooth corners. Tides will be high in late mornings (gradually decreasing from 9.2m to 8.4m). Low tides will be in the mid to late afternoons.

Next Week

Weather

Monday will see the wind move around to a S’ly direction (only light force 2-3), which will bring sunny skies and slightly warmer air than the previous days. Tuesday will see the real jump though, when the wind changes to an ESE’ly, potentially taking us up to something like 24°C. The latter part of the week is then a bit uncertain with respect to wind direction, so it’s not clear whether we shall have a warm continental influence or a slightly cooler Maritime flow. Either way, it’s looking mostly (if not entirely) dry, with plenty of very pleasant sunshine for those final summer-holiday beach trips.

Surf and the Water

The surf should be 2-3 feet and clean most days… especially on Monday and Tuesday. Light winds should mean that every day most coasts will be good for swimming. Tides will be shrinking… with Monday’s high (around midday) being just 7.9m and Wednesday and Thursday’s highs (in the late afternoons), being around 6.8m.

The next forecast update will be on Saturday morning…
