Tuesday and Wednesday
Weather
A couple of positive changes for these two days. Perhaps you already thought the dry weather and those gorgeous milky sunsets were relative bliss for January… well now the force 3-4 SSE’ly wind will be replaced by a light force 1-2 and the temperature will climb by a couple of degrees, peaking at around 9°C each day rather than 7°C. Night time temperatures will still be on the low side though, getting down to around 4°C, so gardeners and growers should be aware that a ground frost will still be likely in places.
Surf and the Water
Clean 4 foot surf both days, along with smooth swimming conditions (on all coasts but especially on the north). Tides will be high around 6:40am (8.7m) Tuesday and 7:25am (8.9m) Wednesday. Low tides will be around 1:15pm and 2pm respectively.
Thursday and Friday
Weather
With a little more moisture in the air, it’s highly likely that these two days, although still rain-free with very light breezes, will be much cloudier than the previous five. With the wind-direction being SE’ly, the cloud (and perhaps some mist or fog patches) will be concentrated around the southern and eastern sides of the Island, meaning that the north and west coasts will probably still see some sunshine at times, especially in the afternoons. Temperatures will peak around 8-9°C on Thursday, then around 7°C on Friday. They probably won’t fall any lower than 5-6°C overnight though, meaning that ground frost will be highly unlikely.
Surf and the Water
Thursday will be the most solid day of surf, with some proper powerful 6-8 foot whompers (a truly special day for people who know how to make the most of the shallow reefs). Friday’s surf looks likely to be 4 foot again, so still excellent but much more inclusive. Swimming conditions will be best up north again, but the east will also be pretty smooth. Tides will be high around 8:05am (8.9m) Thursday and 8:40am (8.8m) Friday. Low tides will be around 2:30pm and 3:10pm respectively.
The Weekend
Weather
Winds will remain SSE’ly but get quite a lot stronger over the weekend... probably moderate force 4 on Saturday and then fresh force 5 on Sunday, hats and gloves will still be required. That said, skies will be partly cloudy/partly sunny and temperatures will be reasonably high (for mid-January), peaking at 9-10°C by day, then falling to around 6-7°C by night.
Surf and the Water
Clean 3-4 foot surf on Saturday, likely increasing to 5-6 feet on Sunday. Swimming conditions will be best in the north and west, providing you go around high tide, when the sea walls offer some wind-protection. Tides will be high around 9:15am (8.6m) Saturday and 9:45am (8.2m) Sunday. Low tides will be around 3:45pm and 4:15pm respectively.
Next Week
Weather
After that temporary weekend blip, it looks like we will return to high pressure and all the dry and settled weather that it brings. On this occasion however, it looks relative short-lived, only maintaining a dry and gentle SE’ly flow Monday to Wednesday, before the wind strengthens significantly on Thursday and Friday, with occasional periods of rain or drizzle. Temperatures will be highest (9-11°C) on Thursday and Friday, but the previous days (7-9°C) will feel much nicer due to the more friendlier wind and weather.
Surf and the Water
If such a thing is possible, it looks as though the insanely good run of surf will penetrate well into the week, perhaps all the way through it. Monday’s waves will be around 4-5 feet and clean, then theey will gradually drop off to around 2 feet by Wednesday, before likely increasing to 6 feet or bigger on Thursday and Friday. Tides will be high in the late mornings through the first half of the week, then at lunchtime through the second… getting smaller day by day, going from around 7.8m on Monday to 6.6m on Friday.
The next forecast update will on Wednesday or Thursday…
