Monday
Weather
A cloudy but probably dry day. Only the smallest chance of a random spit and spot. Cloud-breaks will be minimal, but it’s not out of the question that we’ll luck into the odd moment when a little sunshine slips through. Winds will be SSW’ly light force 3 for the most part, but it could pep up to moderate force 4 at times. Temperatures will be pretty slow to change beneath the cloud sheet… gradually increasing from around 7-8°C early morning to 8-10°C in the evening.
Surf and the Water
Clean and solid 8 foot surf on the west coast, 2-3 feet on the north. Generally, the north and east coasts will be best for winter swimmers, because the other coasts will have a bit too much swell. Tides will be high at 9:45am and 10:10pm (9.1m and 8.6m respectively). Low tide will be at 3:30pm.
Tuesday
Weather
Another mostly cloudy day, but this one promises a little sunshine to start and then a little rain to finish. The wind will come straight from the south and be slightly stronger than on Monday… this time it will be force 4-5. The temperature will be marginally higher, but the stronger wind will make it feel about the same, increasing from around 8°C at dawn to 10-11°C in the evening.
Surf and the Water
Clean and even bigger surf on this day… 10 foot on the west coast, 4-5 feet on the north. Generally, the north coast will be best for winter swimmers. Tides will be high at 10:30am and 10:50pm (8.6m and 8.1m respectively). Low tide will be at 4:50pm.
Wednesday
Weather
A fairly sunny day, with light and variable breezes, making it feel really pleasant when we hit the afternoon max of 10-11°C. Dawn time and then night time will be on the cool side though, with a min of around 4°C and a ground frost likely in places.
Surf and the Water
Clean surf again, this time around 8 feet on the west coast, just like Monday. Swimming conditions will be smooth on all coasts, so long as you pick a bay that is sheltered from the swell (east coast will obviously be easiest). High tide will be 7.8m at 11:15am. Low tides will be at 5:10am and 5:35pm.
Thursday and Friday
Weather
As a moderate E’ly breeze establishes itself through Thursday and then a fresh force 5 ENE’ly though Friday, the temperature will take a bit of a dive… only peaking around 7°C on Thursday and then just 6°C on Friday. Skies will be bright at times on Thursday, but for the most part it will be cloudy but dry. On Friday, there will be a bit of give and take… a few showers for sure, but in between them will be some slightly brighter sunshine than on Thursday.
Surf and the Water
Clean surf on Thursday, 5 feet at dawn reducing to 2-3 feet by dusk. Then slightly choppy on Friday, but increasing from 2-3 feet at dawn back to 5 feet again by dusk. High tides will be at lunchtime… 7.1m on Thursday and 6.8m on Friday.
The Weekend
Weather
Another two days of sunshine and showers, but the headline for the weekend will really be how cold it is… peaking at only 5°C each day, it will easily be cold enough for the showers to turn a bit sleety. Winds will be moderate force 4 NE’ly, so the south coast beaches and cliff-paths will certainly be the most comfortable places to go for a weekend walk.
Surf and the Water
Rather choppy west-coast surf, 5 foot on Saturday, likely dropping to 3-4 feet on Sunday. Winter swimmers will find the smoothest water along the south coast. Tides will be low in the mid-mornings, then high in the late afternoons (very small movements, with highs of 6.7m on Saturday and 7.2m on Sunday).
The next forecast update will on Tuesday or Wednesday…
